It\'s Naturopathic Medicine Week

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are opening their doors from May 7 to 13 and educating the public about what they do and what naturopathic medicine is all about.

Yesterday marked the start of Naturopathic Medicine Week in Canada. Running from May 7 to 13, it’s a great opportunity to get out and learn what naturopathic medicine is all about.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) across Canada will be holding free educational and diagnostic events. They\’ll be discussing the naturopathic approach to stress, eating for energy and health, pregnancy, perimenopause, digestive issues, and the benefits of naturopathic medicine.

What do NDs do?
More than 1,675 NDs practise across Canada. They’re gaining increased recognition as health care practitioners specializing in natural health and preventive medicine.

Are NDs regulated?
Five provinces regulate NDs, including British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia, with other provinces seeking regulations.

What is naturopathic medicine?
This form of medicine blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. A large focus of naturopathic medicine is on health promotion and disease prevention. It advocates using the healing power of the body to treat the underlying cause of disease.

NDs tailor diet and lifestyle changes for each patient, and may also incorporate natural therapies such as

  • botanical medicine
  • hydrotherapy
  • homeopathy
  • traditional Chinese medicine
  • acupuncture
